I'm still recovering from the 2007 election. Jim Henry, the Democratic candidate for Supervisor, lost by only 52
votes. Since there are only 42 election districts, Jim would be our supervisor today if he won less than 2 more
votes per election district. The recount that was held was a roller coaster ride as the early recounted districts
portended a positive trend for Jim; unfortunately, those early trends didn't hold. So, congratulations to new supervisor,
Linda Kabot.
I can't sufficiently thank Town Board candidate Sandra Dunn, Justice candidate Andrea Schiavoni, Trustee candidate
Janet Beck and Receiver of Taxes candidate Bruce King - all of whom ran spirited and positive campaigns - for the
energy, eloquence and passion they demonstrated on the campaign trail.
Our nugget of cheer came when Town Board candidate, Anna Throne-Holst won one of the two Town Board positions that
were in play in 2007. Anna is already making her mark on the Town Board, drawing attention to budget gaps in several
departments and calling for an audit to determine the extent of budgetary problems. Anna also brought attention
to cost overruns in the Flanders Community Center renovation project. Keep up the good work, Anna.
2008 should be exciting; as I write, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama continue their spirited contest. We are fortunate
to have two excellent candidates, either one should achieve success in November.
On the local scene we'll all get behind congressional candidate, Tim Bishop. In 6 years Tim has compiled a stellar
record of achievement. In particular, thanks to Tim, college students and their parents should have an easier financial
path to that coveted degree.
Also on the local scene, we will have a State Assembly and Senate race as well as Town Board and Town Justice races.
We will announce our slate over the next couple of months. In the meantime, the Democratic Committee continues
to build the party. Through entertaining fundraisers like movie and dinner nights, and pub quizzes we seek to meet
new Democrats to encourage them to join the party. Oh, and we hope to raise a few dollars in the process. Also,
plans are already underway for our second annual Democratic summer bash -- another exciting and fun filled event.
The Democratic Committee in Southampton Town continues to grow into a viable positive political force. Our goal
is to find visionary candidates whose sole purpose in the political arena is to make life better for the residents
of Southampton Town. Care to join us - please give me a call. The best to all of you.
Michael Anthony
Chair, Southampton Town Democratic Committee
